Many traditionalists loathe artificial turf for its inauthenticity to their sport’s culture. For many, things like the smell of fresh-cut grass are an essential aspect of taking in a ballgame.
Heat Absorption
One of the biggest complaints about turf is heat.
The plastic blades and rubber filling absorbs and holds on to the sun’s heat. Synthetic surfaces can be 35 degrees Fahrenheit to 55 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than natural grass.
Injuries and Soreness
Although some studies show there’s no discernable difference in injury potential, many athletes don’t feel comfortable on turf.
Most complaints are anecdotal and based on experience. US soccer star Alex Morgan, concerned about the use of turf during the women’s World Cup, claimed she feels sorer and for longer after playing on an artificial surface.
