The Drought’s Impact on California’s Iconic Giant Sequoias

By now, most people are aware that the ongoing drought is wreaking havoc across California, but the toll it’s taking may be even larger—giant, in fact. While cities enforce water restrictions, offer rebates for lawn replacements, and scramble to preserve water supplies, the drought may be affecting one of the state’s most iconic natural wonders: the giant sequoia trees.

Giant sequoias, which have stood for millennia, are some of the thirstiest trees in the world. In the scorching heat of summer, these towering giants—some of which soar up to 30 stories high—can consume anywhere from 500 to 800 gallons of water per day. Despite their resilience to natural threats like beetle infestations, wildfires, and storms, scientists are now concerned that California’s relentless drought may be their most formidable challenge yet.

The California drought has intensified public awareness of water conservation, but much more needs to be done. Replacing water-intensive lawns is a good start, as irrigation accounts for a significant portion of water usage. However, improving water management systems, especially regarding recycling, is critical in addressing the long-term effects of water shortages—not only for people but for these ancient giants as well.
